Chronic diseases affecting the well-being of your feet
Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting many parts of the body including the feet. Successful management of the condition requires a team approach. Failure to not regularly having your feet checked could lead to other severe complications.
Our goal is to provide a comprehensive approach to foot care and lower limb health.
Today’s podiatrists are an integral part of the holistic treatment team and has documented success in preventing amputations. The key to a healthy diabetic is early recognition of complications, intervention and necessary appropriate referral.
Statistics have shown that:
- More than 65,000 lower limbs are amputated annually due to complications from diabetes.
- After an amputation, the chance of another amputation within three to five years is as high as 50%.
Including a podiatrist in your diabetes care can reduce the risk of lower limb amputation up to 85% and lowers the risk of hospitalization by 24%. The keys to amputation prevention are early recognition and regular foot examinations performed by a podiatrist. Assessments must be conducted for all patients even if no complications are present.
